MakerFaire Ljubljana 2017

Last week I have attended and helped at the first local Maker Faire event in Ljubljana. This is an event that tries to bring together people or organizations that create things (everything from software and electronics to art and woodwork) in order to promote science, curiosity and knowledge transfer.

In the stands we could meet with the makers from Slovenia and all other neighboring country. Among other things it was apparent that there is a strong motion towards using 3d printers and Arduino platforms as most of the stands showcased a product or idea based on one of them.

The biggest advantage of an event like this for me was a practical aspect of it. There were numerous hands-on activities where you cold try the state-of-the-art equipment, play with different experiments or create your own simple electrical circuit.

The forth (third last year) edition of the largest fantasy and sci-fi event in the Slovenija was held last week in the place called Poligon. It was even bigger than last year, with about 1300+ visitors throughout the day.

The place consisted of three separate rooms. One for the main event, and two for the lectures and board games.

Our LARP group even had it own stall where we promoted our activities and tried to get get some new members for the game.

This years’ cosplays were much better and had more details than in previous years. To bring the event on even higher level, a foreign cosplayer was part of the jury for the copslay panel and gave us many valuable tips on how to prepare costumes as cheaply as possible and which materials to use.

Na meji nevidnega 2015

So far the largest fantasy/sci-fi event of this kind in Slovenia, with 1000+ visitors (more than twice as much as last year), was this year held in a much larger sports hall with side rooms where all lectures and open discussions took place.

There was also a lot of interesting thing going on at the stalls. Many different memorabilia to spend your money on, talking to a local fantasy and sci-fi clubs and societies, seeing new or ongoing projects related to the topics of an event.

And for the end, the best part of events like this – Cosplay. Quality and quantity of the people cosplaying is steadily rising with each passing year. There was a large variety of characters taken from comics, mangas, films, TV shows and even from the latest pc games.
