11 – Asteroid Ceres pases about a degree from Moon. Occultation event can be seen on some parts of Earth.

5 – Occultation of bright star Aldebaran by Moon. Central time of the occultation is 21:38 UT.

10 – Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The Moon passes through the outer edge of the Earth shadow between 22:34 UT and 02:53 UT.

11 – Full Moon.

11 – Regul pases less than 1 degree from Moon. Occultation event in southern hemisphere.

17 – Venus at brightest.

20 – Asteroid Eunomia in opposition.

22 – Asteroid Metis in opposition.

26 – New Moon.

List of events in sky this month – January 2017:

1 – Close approach of Mars and Neptune, they pass within 1 arc-minute of each other.

2 – Close approach of the Moon and Venus, they pass within 2 degrees of each other.

3 – Close approach of the Moon and Mars, they pass within 13 arc-minute of each other.

3 – The Quadrantid Meteor Shower peaks at 14 UT, with ZHR varying between 50 and 200.,

4 – Earth at perihelion, this is the point when Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun.

7 – Pluto at solar conjunction. Not observable as the planet is located behind the Sun.

11 – Mercury reaches its greatest brightness in the dawn sky.

12 – Full Moon.

19 – Mercury at greatest elongation west and is well placed in the dawn sky.

26 – New Moon.

Events this month – December 2016:

5 – Conjunction between the Moon and Mars at 09:20 UT, separation of ~3 degrees.

6 – Conjunction between the Moon and Neptune at 21:40 UT, separation of less than half a degree.

9 – Conjunction between the Moon and Uranus at 21:07 UT, separation of ~3 degrees.

10 – Saturn at solar conjunction. This event is not observable as the Saturn in located directly behind the Sun.

11 – Mercury reaches 21 degrees eastern elongation at 04:00 UT. Favorable positions for the observation of this planet.

12 – Full Moon (aka Super Moon, because of its apparent size)

13/14 – The Geminid meteors peak. ZHR of ~120.

21 – December solstice. The shortest day in this year for the northern hemisphere.

22 – Conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter at 18:14 UT, separation of ~2 degrees.

29 – New Moon.

Sky this month – January 2016

Here is a list of astronomical events for given month. Location dependent events listed here are visible from central Europe.

January 2016:

4 – The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks at 8:00 UT with a ZHR variable from 100-130 favouring North America. This shower has very narrow time of peak activity with more visible meteors than Perseids shower.

9 – Close conjunction between bright planets Saturn and Venus at 4:12 UT. They pass within 10 arcsec of each other. Event is easily observable within a field of view of a telescope with higher magnifications.

10 – Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) should be at its brightest, with magnitude of around +5.

11 – New Moon.

24 – Full Moon.

14 – The Geminids meteor shower peak with a ZHR of around 120. Favourable conditions with the Moon (illuminated less than 10%) bellow the horizon.

22 – The December southward solstice occurs at 4:48 UT.

23 – The Ursid meteor shower peaks at 2:30 UT with a ZHR variable from 10-50 favouring Europe and the Middle East.

23 – The Moon occults Aldebaran for Europe and central Asia at ~19:32 UT. Additional informations.

25 – Full Moon.

29 – Mercury reaches greatest evening elongation at 19.7° east of the Sun at 00:01 UT.
